A Bronx family is upset after being told their pre-school daughter can no longer log on to remote learning because she doesn't have a flu shot.

4-year-old Kimberly Richetti Garcia is a pre-K student at St. Frances de Chantal School, and she's been remote learning since September until recently.

Kimberly's parents say her teacher told them on Monday that she could no longer attend Zoom classes without a flu vaccination. They informed the school that her doctor isn't available until the end of next week, so she'll have to wait until then.

"At the end of the day, she's been suspended until she has the flu shot," says Kimberly's father Peter Richetti Garcia. "I thought it was kind of strange that they wouldn't allow a 4-year-old to sign on because she doesn't have a flu shot even though she has no contact with anyone in school."

The New York City Department of Health requires children between 6 months and 5 years old who attend city-regulated day care and preschool to receive the flu vaccine annually.

"If need be, we're going to have to get the flu shot because I don't want her missing out on a full year of school," says Richetti Garcia

However, the girl's parents say they plan to ask the doctor for an exemption from the vaccine and say they think it's a precursor of things to come.

Richetti Garcia says, "Why does she need to have a flu shot in order to go to Zoom class? And if that's the case now, later on when the COVID-19 vaccination is out, I can just imagine what they're going to tell us then.”

News 12 reached out to the Archdiocese of New York who says that they continue to rigorously follow the guidelines of the New York City Department of Health.
