Jose Gonzalez, the Bronx man accused of running over city EMT worker Yadira Arroyo, virtually appeared in court Tuesday.
At the center of Tuesday’s virtual court appearance was Gonzalez’s mental state during the time of the crime.
Arroyo’s family tells News 12 that experts for the prosecution and defense had opposing findings on whether Gonzalez is competent to stand trial.
Gonzalez is accused of killing Arroyo back in March of 2017. He is accused of hijacking Arroyo’s ambulance and running her over with it as she tried to stop him from taking off.
He is charged with murder, manslaughter and robbery. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 22.
Last week marked the fourth anniversary of the EMT’s death. Her family says they’re trying to remain hopeful and that the case could move to trial in June.
In a statement, FDNY EMS Local 2507, the union which represents city EMT’s said, "Justice for Yadira Arroyo is overdue. We will continue to stand with the family and her friends until justice is done.”
