A Bronx man claims he was the victim of a brutal assault by several police officers.

A lawyer for 23-year-old Santiago Hernandez says surveillance video captured the alleged assault.

The video appears to show Hernandez being approached by two female officers who search him and handcuff him. Moments later, half a dozen officers arrive on the scene and pull Hernandez down onto the pavement. The video appears to show at least one officer kick him and strike him with a baton repeatedly.

Court documents show the officers' complaint against Hernandez says they found synthetic marijuana on him and that he resisted arrest, among other things.

Hernandez's lawyer, Jay Heinrich, says the DA has thrown out those charges, claiming that there is not enough evidence.

Heinrich says his client is out on parole for a gang-related shooting when he was 14, but adds that his client's past doesn't justify the officers' behavior.

The NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau is now investigating the incident.

Heinrich says he and Hernandez are in the preliminary stages of filing a civil lawsuit against the city. He tells News 12 that his client will no longer appear on camera because of the ongoing investigation and possible lawsuit.
