The Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing of a Bronx man for a 2020 nightclub shooting in University Heights.

Domingo Berroa, 37, will serve 20 years to life in prison for opening fire inside Trios nightclub, killing Wendolin Ortiz, 19, and striking a man in the arm.

The Bronx DA sentenced Berroa to an additional 10 years behind bars and five years post-release supervision for criminal possession of a weapon.

According to court documents, Berroa pulled out a gun during an argument on Oct. 19 inside the club near Jerome Avenue and North Street and fired once, missing his intended target.

Police arrested Berroa the next day at John F. Kennedy International Airport after he purchased a ticket to the Dominican Republic.

"The defendant put people's lives at risk when he opened fire inside a nightclub. His reckless actions caused the death of a 19-year-old woman who was enjoying a night out. No one should have to fear they are risking their lives by enjoying our borough's nightlife,” said District Attorney Darcel Clark.
