? Many Bronx seniors enrolled in Medicare are missing out on a money-saving program that would also extend the deadline to sign up for a prescription plan.
Virginia Panias lives on $750 a month, which mostly goes toward medications. Panias signed up for Medicare Part D, but says she was unaware of the extra help program for low-income people. The Medicare Rights Center says only 20 percent of eligible participants are aware of the choice. The program allows for cheaper co-payments on drugs.
Individual Bronx Medicare participants who make $1,300 or less monthly and couples that make $1,700 or less monthly are eligible. The sign up deadline is December 31, unlike the May 15 deadline for Medicare Part D.
