A Bronx mother says unsafe living conditions continue to worsen in her Hunts Point apartment.
On Wednesday, Tasha Garcia showed News 12 several violations in her apartment. Now, she says the city or her landlord will step in to relocate her.
Some of those violations included exposed electrical wiring, water damage, mold and other safety issues. Just an hour after News 12’s coverage on the issue on Wednesday, she says her bathroom ceiling collapsed.
“I am disgusted. I'm hurt, I've been living in here for 11 years. It is sad they don't even care,” said Garcia.
The Bronx mother says she fears not only for her family but for the safety of her neighbors.
Six years ago, two baby sisters were scalded to death after a radiator pipe broke in their apartment.
Garcia and Tenant Association President Anne Martinez says very little has been done to prevent another tragedy.
“We have been trying for years since the babies died because of the radiator. Nothing has been done,” said Martinez.
Garcia says she currently has no heat in her apartment. FDNY turned off the boiler when they came Wednesday night to inspect her bathroom cave-in.
News 12 cameras followed Garcia when trying to speak to a representative from the city’s Housing Preservation and Development about the ceiling collapse in her bathroom.
She says she wants her family relocated to temporary housing immediately.
“They say they can't do anything. This is an emergency, and we are still living in this apartment,” said Garcia.
She says she can’t shower, use her sink or toilet. She says she’s concerned that the longer she’s left to breathe in the debris from her bathroom, the more her family’s health is put at risk.
