Parents and daycare providers plan to rally Wednesday in support of city-run daycare programs.
The union representing daycare workers says the city is transferring daycare programs from the Administration of Children?s Services to the Department of Youth Administration and Community Development. Union workers say the transfer will close approximately 25 daycare centers. According to the union, the centers that stay open will see an elimination of transportation services and a replacement of trained professionals with teenagers.
Many parents fear their children will now be subject to violence, drugs and pedophiles in the streets. Long-time daycare providers say they may soon find themselves without work. The new rules are scheduled to go into place by September 8.
