A one of a kind program in Mott Haven is helping residents from becoming homeless.
According to Howard Sherman, a judge in the Housing Help Program, 20 percent of homelessness is due to eviction. The three-year pilot program offers free services for those facing eviction. It runs out of the Bronx Civil Courthouse and is the only court-based homeless prevention program in the country.
Sherman says they offer court representation and advice as well as placing those who are evicted. He says the program helps residents overcome problems that lead to eviction, such as domestic abuse, lack of job training and substance abuse. Sherman hopes the city will adopt the program to expand its scope and help with funding.
