School will be out soon, and for many families in the Bronx, keeping kids entertained in the summer without breaking the bank isn't easy.
"Life is expensive already as it is,” said parent Yiovanny Madera.
Right now, the Hunts Point Recreation Center is quiet, but in just a few weeks, it will be buzzing with kids taking part in free summer programs. For families in the Bronx, it's a chance to keep their kids busy without spending a dime.
Ashanta Smith, manager at Hunts Point Recreation Center, says their programming will include sports, arts and crafts and more.
It runs Tuesday through Friday, with some programs on Saturday. It's free for all kids in the five boroughs.
"That's the goal, to be able to provide free great programming that is affordable to everybody in the community but anybody's welcome, come from Staten Island," Smith said.
Mashell Harris has a 2-year-old son and a daughter on the way. He plans to take advantage of the programs as his kids get older.
"I think it is just an opportunity for them to continue that engagement, and for us, it's kind of way that we could have some time for ourselves,” said Harris.
Williams Bridge Oval, Kwame Ture Recreation Center and Poe Park will also offer free summer programs.
“I grew up as a park kid since 7 years old,” explained Smith. “I was in these free programs. That's where I got my passion to keep passing it down."
Programs start July 7, and people can sign up at any time.
