During Black History Month, News 12 is celebrating Bronx residents who are making an impact on the community.
Samuel Brooks, of Mott Haven, is leading the charge to preserve the rich history of his neighborhood. As the president of the Mott Haven Historic Districts Association, Brooks introduces new residents to the history of the area, the people and culture that make it special.
"In this particular neighborhood in the Mott Haven East Historic District, we are talking about homes that date back to 1889," says Brooks.
After noticing the lack of diversity in the preservation community, Brooks says he made it his mission to inspire fellow Bronx residents to get involved in preservation.
Currently, many of the borough's 13 historic districts are undergoing a revitalization to restore its beauty while also keeping its original character. Brooks says the Mott Haven Historic Districts Association will soon be offering public walking tours through the district.
