Saturday's gloomy weather did not stop Bronx residents from celebrating Garifuna Heritage Month, with music and dancing filling Brooke Avenue.
Garifuna Heritage Month runs from March 11 to April 12. It is the same month people from Garifuna were deported by the British 219 years ago from the island of St. Vincent to Central American countries like Honduras, Belize and Guatemala.
Today, the Caribbean Garifuna people are remembering their families who made a better life for themselves in Central America after deportation. Some Garifuna people came to the United States, where they now have a large community in the Bronx and around the city.
This is the 18th annual Garifuna Heritage Month celebration at Evangelical Garifuna Church.
Members of the church staff say they plan on continuing the tradition as their community continues to grow.
