Residents across the Bronx are celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. in Baychester.
News 12’s Brittany Cadet was at the event, where performances by local public school students and organizations were underway.
Students reenacted a play of important Black figures from history like Carl E. Hastings and Rosa Parks.
"I decided to have children do something because it’s all about family,” said event organizer Johnnie Goff.
Borough President Vanessa Gibson says it is important to remember Martin Luther King Jr’s impact on history.
"I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for him, a lot of us in the council wouldn't be here if he didn't pave the way,” she said.
"He made a lot of change in his world back then and that change had a legacy that lasted,” said Bronx resident Marley Nation. “We hear about the ‘I have a dream’ speech, but he also fought for a lot of other things, like reparations from slavery and also for everyone to be able to vote."
