Residents headed to the Bronx Zoo Wednesday as a way to beat the 90-degree weather and humidity.

The zoo saw an influx of visitors because admission is free on Wednesdays, but also because residents say it's a way to cool off.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory in the Bronx until 6 p.m.

Local officials also issued an Air Quality Alert and are warning of the impacts of extreme heat that can cause illness and death among the at-risk population.

Officials warn that the heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

The heat wasn't keeping Jenny Laracuente-Guridy, a pregnant woman with two children, from visiting the playground before going to the zoo Wednesday.

"I drink lots of water and I wear my hat to protect me from the sun. We stay in the shade and we sit down a lot," she says.
