A raucous crowd turned out to the Bronx County Courthouse as local leaders and residents stood up against the city's proposed site for one of the Rikers Island replacements in Mott Haven.
Every borough in New York City is proposed to build a new jail to replace Rikers Island, except for Staten Island. The Bronx's proposal has seen staunch dissent.
While some said they want no extra jails at all, others say that Mott Haven just is not the right location, citing the work that has been done there to get rid of crime.
Local leaders also say that the new jail should be closer to the courthouse, like it already is in other boroughs.
The mayor's office said in a statement, "We deeply value the community's responses and look forward to a thorough engagement process. After the scoping meetings there will be more engagement to come."
The office has extended the amount of time people have to email him or write complaints by two weeks, making the last day now Oct. 29.
