The waning days of this mild summer spurred some people to get out and enjoy Barretto Park, Orchard Beach and other Bronx gems on Tuesday, even though it was near the start of the workweek.
Kids waded in the pool at Barretto Park in Hunts Point and beach-goers set up chairs and laid out blankets on the sand at Orchard Beach in Pelham Bay Park. With the start of school nearing for many students, one father decided to treat his children to a day at the beach.
"It's the week off between school and camp, so I took the day off and I'm spending it here with the kids at the beach," said Stephen Gruber.
New York City beaches and public pools are open through Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer; fall starts in late September.
Some New Yorkers say this summer hasn't been that hot, noting the breezy nights and fewer sweltering days than previous summers that saw temperatures soaring and residents fleeing for relief at city cooling centers.
