New York state is funding upgrades to the Cross Bronx Expressway, but some have concerns on how it will affect the community.
Reimaging the Cross Bronx Expressway means addressing concerns of infrastructure and creating more accessibility for pedestrians and cars and cyclist. In this process the State wants to build a multimodal connector, or bridge, that will run over Starlight Park.
The Bronx River Alliance says it is afraid this added infrastructure will harm our borough's ecosystem.
"We're concerned about an additional pavement surface that will increase the amount of stormwater that's entering into the community and entering into the sewer system. Those things will impact the Bronx Rivers ecosystem, but we're also worried about the effects on the communities." said Christian Murphy, ecology and education manager at The Bronx River Alliance.
The New York State Department of Transportation says this project will directly connect the community to Starlight Park, help reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
The project is in its preliminary stages. Feedback from the community is still welcome.
