? Bronx shoppers started paying less at the register Saturday thanks to the state eliminating sales tax on some items.
Legislators agreed to drop the 4 percent state sales tax on clothing and shoes under $110. Previously, Bronx and other city residents were only eligible for the break twice a year. Lawmakers believe eliminating the tax will make New York more competitive with others states, like New Jersey, that do not charge tax on clothing. Governor Pataki (R-NY) wants to have the sales tax reinstated.
Last September, lawmakers also dropped the 4 percent sales tax charged in the city.
