Bronx street renamed to honor community activist Heidi Hynes
Heidi Hynes served as the executive director for the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center from 1997 to 2018, where she worked with elected officials and community members to help the borough, including protesting against gun violence and advocating for more city spending on after-school programs.

312ds agoA woman recognized for her staunch advocacy against inequality in the Bronx was posthumously honored with a street named after her on Saturday.
Heidi Hynes served as the executive director for the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center from 1997 to 2018, where she worked with elected officials and community members to help the borough, including protesting against gun violence and advocating for more city spending on after-school programs.
Hynes passed away Nov. 24, 2019 after battling cancer. She was 51.
A native from Kansas City, Hynes moved to the Bronx to attend Fordham University. She worked at the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition before joining the Mary Mitchell Center.
The corner of 178 St. and Mapes Ave., where she will be honored, is steps away from the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center.
