The transformation of the Bronx Terminal Market has been given the OK Wednesday by the City Council.
The approval of land-use applications comes on the same day Bronx leaders announced how the project will benefit residents. The plan is to redevelop the site and put up a shopping mall with big box stores. Officials say in addition to creating more jobs, they hope to give construction contracts to those in the Bronx.
Merchants from the existing market are saddened by the City Council's decision to approve the project. The decision puts an end to their political fight to stop the shopping mall from being built. The market's remaining merchants say they have reached an initial relocation deal that should be finalized in the coming weeks.
