Neighbors tell News 12 the doors at a community center serving as a polling site on Tuesday had their doors closed at 6 a.m.

While Bronx residents rushed to 3350 Bailey Ave. in an attempt to beat the morning rush of voters, they say they were forced to wait half an hour before getting to cast their vote.

A volunteer at the polling site says workers were waiting for someone at the community center to let them in. The volunteer says once poll site workers were inside, they got to work to get people into voting booths as quickly as possible.

Voters were taking notice; Rafael said his experience inside was much smoother than he expected. "To me, it's really fast and organized. It's really come for five minutes and you're out."

Meanwhile over at Bedford Park, in the same congressional district, neighbors were lined up before the polling site at P.S 8 opened.

Roberta was first in line and says for her it's all about casting a vote for change.

"If we can get the right person in office, then hopefully they can make a change for us and we can see it," she said.

Both polling sites are located in the 13th Congressional District, that includes a very competitive race ahead of the general election.

Voters will be forced to make a decision between long-time incumbent veteran Congressman Adriano Espaillat who has held the seat since 2017, or one of the new faces, which includes democratic socialist, Darializa Avila Chevalier. She is being endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The Board of Elections says as of 9 a.m. over 17,000 Bronx residents had cast a ballot. The total includes the more than 14,000 votes cast in the borough during the nine-day early voting period.
