A Bronx woman says she has struggled to get tested for the coronavirus after visiting several locations.
After being exposed to the virus, Elisa Crespo immediately went looking for a testing site in her neighborhood of Tremont -- but she says the experience wasn’t as she expected.
She says that’s when the nightmare started.
The COVID-19 Center of Excellence on East Tremont Avenue was her first stop after finding it on the city’s COVID-19 information portal.
Crespo says the location left her disappointed. She says her fourth attempt to get tested at St. Barnabas Urgent Care left her stunned.
She says they told her that her insurance wasn’t accepted and that she would have to pay $100 to $120 depending on what test she would like.
A hospital spokesperson says the incident was an unfortunate mistake and provided News 12 with a statement saying, “SBH provides, regardless of insurance type or insurance status, both COVID testing and COVID vaccination.  The sign at the hospital that reads "COVID-19 Vaccine and Testing at SBH Urgent Care Center, Walk-in, No Cost" is accurate.”
According to the health department’s website, Crespo’s 10457 ZIP code is ranked high for coronavirus transmission.
Health Department numbers show one in every seven people in the area was diagnosed with COVID-19.
She says that while she understands the main focus is on vaccinations, she believes having tests easily accessible to the public is just as important to help reduce the spread of the virus.
