North Brooklyn
Mutual Aid is a volunteer-run organization that aims to help neighbors feel
safe as they travel through the city.
The NYPD reported
a 28% increase in hate crimes since last year. It said many of the most recent
crimes were against Asian Americans.
Andy Lin, a coordinator
at North Brooklyn Mutual Aid, says this rise in crime has been enough to
push people to find safety in numbers.
"Mutual Aid
kind of picks up the slack where socioeconomic political systems kind of
fail society," he says.
The latest effort of the group is providing "neighborhood
walks." With this service, residents can contact the organization on its
website
or by calling 646-389-6019, and meet with a volunteer to walk or
bike with them to wherever they need to go.
Lin says the goal
is to help people who may feel unsafe traveling alone and to “help strengthen
ties between the people in the community, and it's what makes community strong.”
The group
has 1,300 volunteers who vouch to keep their neighbors and their community
safe.
