A new effort is being launched in Brooklyn to help Black women combat maternal mortality rates across the borough.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso along with his maternal health taskforce announced a new campaign to connect Brooklyn residents with resources for healthier pregnancies.

The initiative comes as the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reports that Black women are 9.4 times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts.

"It is a problem about the system that exists for obstetrics, it is a problem that exists in the system of the patriarchal model of medicine,” said Reynoso.

The new campaign includes ads in different languages that will be placed at bus stops in the nine most impacted communities, including Bed-Stuy, Brownsville and Crown Heights.

"We've also made a historic allocation of $45 million to three Brooklyn hospitals to help them build state-of-the-art birthing centers, built to save lives,” added Reynoso.

The plan will also have digital ads on social media that lead people to online resources.
