A Brooklyn parent claims pornographic images were shared during a virtual lesson for I.S. 259 students on Thursday.
"A third host took control and shared an actual pornographic video of a woman performing oral on a man,” said Devon Morales.
Morales says she had to speak to her 10-year-old daughter after the incident. "She was embarrassed. You know, she's 10 years old, so what happened afterward was mommy and her had to have a really uncomfortable conversation that she wasn't ready for,” said Morales.
The video lesson was for a sixth grade class, and Morales says she immediately took the incident to Twitter.
She posted a photo of what had happened and called out the city Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, the Department of Education and Mayor Bill de Blasio.
"Upset, upset for all of the students that had to bear witness to that. I felt really terrible for the teacher. And then just really angry with the chancellor and board of ed for not giving our teachers the support they need to have both safe in school learning and safe online learning,” said Morales.
The chancellor addressed the incident, saying it was caused by someone who hacked the class from the outside.
"There is no evidence at this point that it's an external hack. It's more of somebody internally within that school that decided to not play by the rules. So, it's being investigated,” said Carranza.
Morales says that no matter where the inappropriate images came from--she wants the DOE to have better measures to prevent this from happening to other students.
