Brooklyn residents await update on missing loved ones in Florida condo collapse
Multiple people across Brooklyn are waiting to hear an update about loved ones who are still missing following the Florida condo collapse.
The family of former Bergen Beach resident Ruslan Manashirov says he and his wife Nicole Doran are among the dozens still missing Saturday.
Family members say Manashirov grew up in Bergen Beach and worked as a physician in the borough.
A Jewish community established in Surfside decades ago also attracted many Brooklynites.
“The Jewish community there has very strong ties to Brooklyn,” says Rabbi Motti Seligson, of Chabad Lubbavitch. “Many people visit, there are family connections.”
Recording artist Yoni Z moved from Brooklyn to the beach community in January. He says he's worried because he knows many who attend the local shul and are currently missing.
"There are…a lot of people that I've gotten to know over these last few months," he says. "And it's very, very scary. It's very concerning and we just hoping for the best news and very soon."
Rabbi Seligson says the shul has received many donations to help those displaced.
“It’s a beautiful, big synagogue with a great communal hall and they just ran out of space because of what all the people are bringing,” he says.
Rescue efforts are continuing at the site.
