It was a typical day on the job for Uber driver Fritz Sam, who was taking a passenger to LaGuardia Airport before he spotted fire pouring out of a Brooklyn brownstone.
In a moment, that ride took a detour, as Sam went in to help.
"I knew why I went in there," says Sam. "It was to help people get out. That intention and motive was so clear."
Authorities say the fire started around 8 a.m. at 489 Classon Ave.
Uber provided the following statement regarding Sam's heroics:
"We're incredibly grateful to have such a heroic and thoughtful member of our community in Fritz. He went above and beyond to keep his neighbors in New York safe.”
The cause of that fire is still under investigation at this time.
