Tucked away on a quiet, residential block in Bedford Stuyvesant, a historic brownstone is keeping the sound of jazz very much alive.
Inside the dimly lit room, the music doesn’t just fill the space; it pulls you in. Shoulder to shoulder, people from all over become connected by the sound.
“What we hope to happen when people come through those doors is to feel like they've just transported themselves back to a different time,” said Debbie McClean, owner of Brownstone Jazz.
Brownstone Jazz was formed 17 years ago and holds performances every weekend from inside an 1887 brownstone home.
For McClean, who comes from a family of music lovers, creating this space in her grandparents' home makes it all the more special.
“When the music was being created, a lot of that music was being done in brownstones,” said McClean. “A lot of people don't even realize how popular it was right here in Brooklyn, in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Whether on the drums, the sax, or the keys, it’s a chance to hear from different musicians who have made their mark across the globe. Some are even Grammy award winners.
