The puffy bubble jackets that emerged during the golden era of hip-hop are making a return, thanks to a collaboration between the MLB and the athletic apparel brand, Starter.
Former New York Giants player Carl Banks joined hip-hop icons Jadakiss and Funkmaster Flex for the unveiling at the MLB’s Manhattan flagship store on Tuesday.
“Some of hip-hop’s greatest pioneers wore this jacket,” said Banks. “In the 90s, the Yankees were winning championships, you were wearing a bubble jacket, Spike was wearing it in his Pizza Hut commercial.”
Banks says the jacket was nicknamed after the Bronx after former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner insisted his players wear them.
The jacket also represents the ties between sports and hip-hop, as New Yorkers are celebrating the genre’s 50th anniversary this year.
Both Yankees and Mets jackets are now on sale for a limited time, and both teams’ fans will be repping their logos ahead of the final two games of the Subway Series happening this week.
