Authorities say a burglar has been targeting maintenance rooms across the Edenwald Houses, making off with hundreds of dollars’ worth of equipment.
The suspect struck at least four times in the past several weeks. Surveillance video from late last month obtained exclusively by News 12 shows the suspect cracking a lock on a maintenance room door and then walking away with a handcart.
Police say the suspect targeted a different maintenance room in each of the four instances and stole at least three handcarts, which are valued at $120 apiece. The suspect also stole other items, including rakes and soap.
The burglaries occurred between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and the suspect wore a dark blue sweatshirt with a hat. He kept his face covered.
Police say other handcarts at the Edenwald Houses have now been painted green and have "NYCHA" etched into them, making them easier to identify.
Authorities say the burglaries are putting a strain on official resources. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
