Shaquille Roberts, a Bronx man who survived a fire that left him with burns on 40% of his body, is now giving back to his community.
After struggling with self-esteem issues during team sports, Roberts turned to running as a way to cope.
That journey led him to train for the New York City Marathon. While training, he met fellow runner Rob Dalto, and together, they sparked a new movement in the Bronx.
They co-founded the Bronx Burners. What began with just the two of them now has more than 100 members, ages ranging from 7 to 60. The group focuses on fitness, community and support.
The Bronx Burners is also a nonprofit organization that’s raised over $100,000 for scholarships. Roberts says it’s about more than just running — it’s about giving back.
The group meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the track in Macombs Dam Park.
Roberts and Dalto want people who are curious about joining to know that it’s not all marathons.
New York Road Runners, the group that produces the NYC Marathon, also hosts a variety of smaller races like 1-mile, 5-mile, and 10-mile events, making it accessible for all levels.
