Bushwick’s Green Central Knoll Park has become the center of a growing dispute between dog owners and local parkgoers, after NYC Parks began enforcing a strict no-pets policy at the 3-acre greenspace.
The decision has ignited frustration among residents who say the park has long served as an important gathering space for families, and their dogs.
“This has been a pivotal part of the community and now it’s been taken away, locked up from every aspect,” said resident Yoel G. “It’s really a tragedy.”
While dog owners are pushing back, others argue the rule is long overdue, pointing to persistent issues with pet waste and damage to the athletic fields.
“It would be a nice area for people to walk their dogs,” said resident Dana Klager, “but it's hard when there's little kids and they're not picking up after it.”
According to NYC Parks, the no-pets rule was re- enforced after residents raised concerns about dug-up holes and wear on the sports fields. Still, some locals believe there’s room for compromise.
“I think it’s a little unfair to punish people who are responsible dog owners,” said resident Romey Louangvilay. “But I can understand people who are playing baseball or soccer and they don’t want to step in dog poop.”
In search of middle ground, a petition calling for a designated dog area within the park has gathered more than 167 signatures. Supporters say that creating a separate space for pets could meet everyone’s needs.
“I think that would be sufficient for the dog folk to actually have the space that they need,” added Yoel G., “everyone has the space they need, and everyone’s going to be happy within the community.”
NYC Parks maintains that Green Central Knoll remains fully open to the public but continues to urge dog owners to use the city’s designated dog runs and off-leash areas.
