A Canarsie event space remained sealed off with caution tape Sunday, one day after police say a 41-year-old man was shot in the left leg during a daytime shooting that has left neighbors and nearby business owners shaken.

According to police, the shooting happened just after 11:15 a.m. outside 8922 Avenue D. The victim was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where officials say he is recovering in stable condition.

For people who work nearby, the violence hit close to home.

"That's shocking, you know? I know that stuff was going on over here. I didn't know that it happened so darn close," Eli, a barber who works next door, said.

Neighbors say what began as a baby shower inside the event space escalated into violence after an argument broke out. Witnesses told News 12 the suspected gunman fled through the back door of a neighboring recording studio before running down the street.

The shooting has also taken a toll on nearby businesses.

"It sounds like they must have used the exit on the outside to come out or something. I don't know, but It's unfortunate that whatever happened next door is affecting the business. I'm just hoping that they let us operate," Eli said.

Despite the investigation unfolding next door, celebrations continued nearby. A mother hosting her daughter's first birthday party said seeing police outside the venue was unsettling.

"This morning when I came here. I saw the cops over here. And I said, oh, my God. It kind of feel, you know, feels scary for me having my first daughter's birthday here," Claudette said.

Residents say they hope the shooting serves as a turning point for the neighborhood and are calling for stronger action to reduce gun violence.

"It's sad that things like this keep happening with guns. I think we need more restrictions on gun control so people could stop shooting each other. It'll just help the community and help innocent bystanders from being hurt," Jeff, a resident, said.

Police have not announced any arrests. Detectives are asking anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine what led to the shooting.
