A nonprofit organization in Canarsie hosted a gang violence prevention event Saturday

Alpha Leadership Academy says the event had one message above anything else – to keep kids out of the morgue.

This past week, police told News 12 there have been eight shootings in Brooklyn. On Friday, there were six shootings that injured seven people citywide.

The academy offers mentorship and programs that teach de-escalation techniques to young people from ages 10 to 25.

The organization also said starting in September, they’ll be offering their programs in person at I.S. 68 Middle School.
