Police say a Canarsie public school teacher was arrested Monday and accused of assaulting a 10-year-old student.
Moaz Mahmoud, 26, is accused of striking the boy on the left side of his face and shoving him during an argument.
Police sources tell News 12 the attack happened around 11 a.m. inside P.S. 276, located at 1070 East 83rd St.
Authorities say Mahmoud was arrested just over an hour later. He is charged with assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
Parents say they were not made aware of the situation by the school, but hope this is an isolated incident.
“I’m shocked,” said Tiffany, parent of a 6-year-old at P.S. 276. “You should let parents know what happened, because it’s not okay. What caused you to strike that child? Even before you ever raised your hand, why don’t we figure out if the child is going through something?”
Mike Jean-Baptiste, an uncle of a student at the school, said he trusts the staff — but still questions what will be done about the teacher’s actions.
“Once you're a professional, you are expected to act as a professional,” said Jean-Baptiste. “No parent will ever feel comfortable knowing that another adult put their hands on their kids. I just hope that they get to the bottom of it, and it's kind of like an isolated incident.”
According to the District Attorney's Office, Mahmoud was arraigned in court on Feb. 3. A judge released him until his next court date.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Education and is awaiting a response.
