A pair of recent shootings in Canarsie prompted anti-violence advocates to call for new efforts from the city on Sunday.
The Flossy Organization organized the gathering of elected officials, anti-gun violence activists and New Yorkers on the corner of East 80th Street and Flatlands Avenue.
The group called for a new anti-violence hub to be set up in the neighborhood. Their pleas came in the aftermath of two fatal shootings.
On Feb. 6, a 20-year-old was fatally shot on East 79th Street. Just a few weeks prior, Billy Jean Hippolyte was also shot to death on 83rd Street.
The Crisis Management System operates in a total of 22 different neighborhoods that are plagued by gun violence. Its hubs offer intervention and support and are already in eight other nearby locations like East New York and Brownsville.
