Canine Companions honored local veterans in Bay Shore, recognizing not only their military service but also the difference they continue to make in their communities.

Among those honored was Farmingdale resident Staff Sgt. Arturo Edwards, a Vietnam War veteran who now dedicates his time to helping homeless veterans access resources and support. Edwards has helped 20 veterans during the past eight months through his outreach efforts.

"We have packages we set them up with, we visit them, we go to wherever they are at. Our job is to help homeless veterans and make sure each and every veteran is not hungry or left behind," Edwards said.

The event also recognized veterans who served during World War II and the Korean War.

Veterans being honored represent service in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Edwards, a Farmingdale native, is one of the honorees. In addition to his military service in Vietnam, he works with a number of veterans organizations, including Vietnam Veterans of America, AMVETS, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Also being honored is 99-year-old World War II veteran Cpl. Bert Jablon, USAAF (Ret.), of Syosset, recognized for his heroic service.

Additional honorees include Capt. Jay Caputo, USN (Ret.), of Syosset, Sgt. Ron Shindel, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for New York, of Merrick, and Vietnam War veteran and Canine Companions graduate Sgt. Keith Youse, USA (Ret.), along with service dog Lila III.

The annual event recognizes local veterans who go above and beyond to support fellow service members and honor those who have sacrificed for the country.
