Residents in Mount Eden say they are waking up almost daily to their tires, mirrors, rims missing and their cars vandalized.
"I woke up early in the morning and took my daughter to day care, we were going to get in the car, I saw all four tires were stolen, the rims were stolen, and the car was dropped into the street," said Kofi Sekum, who lives on Shakespeare Avenue.
Sekum woke up last week to find his tires and rims stolen and his car left completely on the ground. The rotors were so damaged that his car was in the shop getting repairs, leaving the Lyft driver out of work.
"I drive for Lyft and that's the main thing so now I can't do anything right now, I don't know what to do," said Sekum.
Sekum is not the only one being impacted, people who live along Shakespeare Avenue in Mount Eden say nearly 12 of their vehicles have either had car parts stolen or been completely vandalized.
"They broke the whole window, take something inside, and take the whole tire, I put this on that's a special lock and anyway they take it," said Salic Felix, who also had his tires and rims stolen.
Rodney Silas, who drives a BMW, said he had his mirrors stolen.
"I went to go to work, I had to be at work at 3:30 a.m., my mirrors were folded in, when I pressed the button for them to fold out both of my mirrors were gone," said Silas.
Silas spent over $600 to replace his mirrors and buy anti-left lock covers - and a handful of neighbors have followed suit.
"Some people don't have that unexpected expense, and it was an inconvenience for me also," said Silas.
The market for car parts has skyrocketed in New York state. The DMV says it has recovered nearly $73,000 in stolen parts in the first six months of the year, but that number is likely higher.
