Surveillance video shows scammers placing a skimmer device on a card reader in Mount Eden.

It happened Monday morning at Richard’s Fruits and Vegetables on Jerome Avenue.

Security footage shows two men in baseball caps standing at the counter. One of the men looks around and takes out what appears to be a card skimmer.

The man puts the device on the keypad of the card reader while the other man watches his back.

Co-owner Erick Vidals said it was around 11:15 a.m. when the cashier noticed the card reader was not working properly.

When they went to check it, the skimmer popped off the machine.

Vidals said the illegal device was on their card reader for about one hour.

He told News 12 that they had never seen the scammers before and never had anything like this happen.

“I got scared,” Vidals said. “I got scared, like, what happened here? Who did it? We always focus on our machines to be fine always. In the morning when we come, the cashiers they check.”

Vidals said they’re taking extra security steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

The co-owner told News 12 that about eight to 10 customers could potentially be impacted by the skimming. If you believe you are one of those customers, you’re urged to call police.
