News 12's Pat O'Keefe spoke with friends and family who remembered the life of Johnny Mathis fondly, not only for his work in basketball but his mentorship to hundreds of children.

Take it, you know, today, I'm calling it for a good ish day now because you're not going to be seeing the wet weather and notice our silver lining here, 60 degrees. That's nice and very warm, big departure for December 2nd. And uh we are noticing the trend also heading into the pre dawn hours into tomorrow. Now by tomorrow afternoon, you'll definitely need those umbrellas, a lighter jacket alert for sure. Today, what to wear looks like that um, umbrella for tomorrow's soggy on and off showers all day and heading into dinner time. That's when things really start to improve. But a seasonal return once again, specifically Wednesday into Thursday, as we walk you through our future cast, the clouds are here and they will continue to stay with us thickening and also gradually building to more shower activity heading into overnight at first light, but then we have these rounds of rain. So, you know, not everyone gets to see them and experience them all at once, but their heavier pockets also embedded as early as eight and seven o'clock in the morning. You'll notice Brooklyn, you kinda see that, especially when we're talking about heading towards the afternoon time frame. So after 12 o'clock, that's when we can start to notice a bit more of those moderate heavier pockets, the contours of the deeper um, greens, as well as oranges and yellows. We're gonna need those umbrellas handy all day tomorrow. So be mindful of that accessory by four o'clock, things really lighten up and the showers seem like they kind of exit. But, you know, we are left with the clouds still at bay. So it's kind of a bit more of a damp start heading into Monday. Nice, beautiful clearing and the sunshine is back into play as we start off the next week. Now, as far as rain total, it looks like this. So three quarters of an inch close to an inch for some spots, very localized. I'm not very concerned about localized flooding. Uh but because it seems to be such kind of like nuisance rain, it's just gonna be a rainy day and that's something to just be mindful about. By Tuesday, Wednesday, we get back into the forties and as we start off Hanukkah on Thursday, we are expecting drier conditions and high temperatures into the forties. Much more like December.

Celebration held for life of NYC basketball legend Johnny Mathis

Beloved basketball coach, Johnny Mathis who led the program at Kennedy High School for more than three decades is being mourned by the New York basketball community and news. 12 sports director Pat o'keefe has that story. Johnny Mathis won more than 700 basketball games in two city championships as the coach at John F Kennedy High School, but it was his life's work of coaching and mentoring hundreds of kids that was most fondly remembered during this celebration of his life. My father's life, they didn't go unnoticed. It, it meant something um that I talked about a little bit during the service, but his name means something, his name stands for something. Sometimes when you're coaching high school sports, you become that person that the kids look for, they rely on and he was a pillar of the community. When you talk about Kennedy, you talk about the, the grace that he brought members from all corners of the New York basketball community. Honoring Mathis, including one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA Nate, Tiny Archibald. He was my big brother, you know, and all the things that people know about them that that's part of it. But I mean, he touched my soul, he touched my heart and I'm glad I got a new heart because today I wouldn't have had any heart. I would have probably not made it today for all the lives. He touched off the court. Johnny Mathis did a lot of winning on it. He won the third most games in the history of the Psal for years. He went head to head with the of Cardozo's Ron Naclerio who tops the Psal wins list. The battles. We had the tremendous, my first city championship in 1999 we beat Johnny after the game. He was so, you know, joyful for me and I could see the misery he had losing. And I was very happy because the following year he won his first city championship and starring on that 2000 championship team, Mathis son JC. The day we won the city championship was the happiest days of our lives together. Um That was the best day we both been together a memory to last an eternity at the Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn, Pat o'keefe news. 12.
