The final film made by actor Chadwick Boseman before he died is now streaming on Netflix.
While it may have been the 43-year-old’s final performance, the memories of the hard work and joy he brought to the role lives on for his castmates.
“When I think about him, I think about his laugh…his humor…I don’t think about him being ill, because that doesn’t enter my consciousness,” says co-star Michael Potts.
The film also stars Colman Domingo and Glynn Turman. It is titled “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and depicts the life of 1920s blues singer Ma Rainey – played by actress Viola Davis.
The story revolves around Rainey’s battles against racism, exploitation and friction within the band – particularly Boseman’s headstrong and ambitious Levee. It all comes to a head during a recording session in Chicago.
“Ma Rainey was a woman fighting to control her art, to possess it herself…she knew the worth of it,” Potts says.
The film is based on the stage play by August Wilson and is directed by George Wolf. The issues and conflicts at the center of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” may feel familiar to audiences today.
“It’s ahead of its time in so many ways, as well as in that it is dealing with so many different components of the human experience,” says Turman.
“We just had to bring a little bit of ourselves into it, like with any project,” Domingo says. “I remember George [Wolf] telling us that characters tell their story so that you know where you belong in the film. It’s your story as well. I’m going to reveal my Black trauma. And please, Chad had his, Michael and Glynn. I’m going to reveal mine so you’re going to reveal yours.”
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is streaming on Netflix right now.
