Residents impacted by the chimney collapse at a Mott Haven apartment building were able to retrieve a few items from their units on Saturday.

For the first time since the Wednesday collapse at the Mitchel Houses, Mimi, who lives above the boiler, was allowed to return briefly to collect her belongings.

Mimi packed what she could. Her pots and pans were stuffed in small bags. Mimi said she’s been relocated to a hotel but is not happy.

“It’s not like your home,” she said tearfully. “I decompress in my house, and I don’t have that now.”

Her upstairs neighbor, Noel, showed News 12 the damage inside his apartment. His windows were blown out, his air conditioner was on the floor, and his children’s medical equipment were covered in debris.

“These are the parts for the breathing machine. We all know this can’t be used anymore,” he said.

Both families are living in temporary housing, waiting and hoping for repairs that will allow them to return home.
