The city is marching forward with a major project to repair and upgrade the step street on West 229th Street in Kingsbridge.
The city departments of Transportation and Design and Construction are investing $6.6 million to replace the crumbling staircase with new granite steps and install new lighting and street landings.
The 90-year-old step street carries a large volume of pedestrian traffic, officials say, prompting the facelift.
The projected completion date is in late 2018. Until then, temporary wooden steps will allow visitors to bypass construction.
