The state is going to make administrators at schools in the Bronx and the rest of the city do some homework if they want more than $300 million. The "Contracts for Excellence" program would keep funding from 55 school districts unless the districts can provide specific state-approved ways to improve student achievement. Some of the approved methods to use the money include making class days longer, hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes and providing extra training for teachers and principals. The school districts would receive the funding once the plans are approved. School districts have until July to submit their plans, which must be implemented by September.
