The New York City Council approved a new bill aimed at providing suicide prevention resources to students.
The new bill requires the Department of Education to annually distribute the information to all students starting September 2023.
Council members say this approval will connect students experiencing mental health-related distress to accessible care and support. Officials say the move is particularly critical after students experienced two years of isolation during the pandemic.
Health experts say suicide continues to be a serious problem among young people. It is the second leading cause of death among children, adolescents and young adults 15-24 years old.
