Candidates running for City Council speaker talked about the city's most important issues at a public forum Tuesday night.
The event, titled The Justice Forum, was held at the National Action Network House of Justice in Harlem.
Some hot-button issues discussed at the meeting were the NYCHA lead paint controversy and police brutality.
Currently, Melissa Mark-Viverito holds the City Council speaker seat.
There are eight candidates in total. One of them, Councilman Ritchie Torres, is from the Bronx.
Torres is currently the youngest member of City Council at 29 years old. He serves as the chair on the Committee on Public Housing.
The City Council will elect its new speaker at its first meeting in January. The position requires a majority of votes, or at least 26 out of 51.
