Members of the New York City Council on Wednesday debated how sex education is being taught in schools.
Back in 2017, the City Council created the sexual health education task force to review the curriculum and made suggestions in a 2018 report.
In September, Mayor Eric Adams created another task force to reexamine and build upon the 2018 report.
"I think there is sort of a misconception that HIV is no longer relevant to young people,” said Sarah Cocuzzo, Director of Heath Education with the New York City Department of Education. It is important since young people are the most sexual health risk.”
The committee also heard legislation on intro 1057 which would require the DOE to create an annual report on journalism courses, clubs and publications in high schools.
