The City Council’s food pantry initiative at schools in high-poverty communities will continue after a one-year pilot program.

Last year, the City Council announced that it would add food pantries to city schools. The program shows no signs of slowing down.

The program started with 16 schools across the city and now it has expanded to 25 schools. One of the new schools added to the program is P.S. 30.

According to the school, about 30 families from P.S. 30 use the food pantry once a month.

In addition to offering food items to take home, the school pantries also offer personal and feminine hygiene items.

“You don’t have to wonder anymore, just come in. We will put you on the list and you come in every month,” says Ana Vasquez.  “This is about helping our community.”
