New York City is tightening its grip on the illegal sales of cannabis products.
City officials introduced a new bill that targets the landlords who are renting commercial spaces to these sellers. In New York, it is illegal to sell cannabis products without a license, and according to the state website, there are only seven licensed dispensaries in the five boroughs.
Councilmember Lynn Schulman says the bill prohibits landlords from leasing to unlicensed sellers of controlled substances or tobacco products. Violators will receive a warning from the sheriff and can be subject to penalties.
The sheriff's department will also have to submit a monthly report to the City Council detailing their enforcements.
