Hundreds of migrants have arrived in New York City during the past year, and the City Council is launching a new plan to help organizations that are aiding those seeking asylum.
The partnership, called Welcome NYC, provides financial support to the organizations helping migrants assimilate to their new lives.
“Welcome NYC will help the organizations with more broadly critical services including work force development, adult literacy, mentorship, youth programming, social and educational programs, food assistance, and other programs that empower families and young adults,” said City Council speaker Adrienne Adams.
Organizers say that the $2.2 million partnership will help them provide resources to those who are in need of guidance once they step foot into New York. Some organizers, such as Bridge Street Development’s Sonia Velazquez, say this partnership is the start of a more collaborative effort from these organizations.
According to the City Council, the initiative will receive funding for the next four months before reviewing options for the next fiscal year.
