The City Council voted in favor of two new e-bike safety bills in the latest effort to crack down against illegal lithium-ion batteries.

This comes after the latest e-bike fire took place in Harlem, injuring dozens and killing one person.

One bill will require all businesses that sell, rent or lease vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries to post safety information and online retailers to share that safety info on their websites.

The second bill will increase penalties for businesses that sell, lease or rent illegal or uncertified lithium-ion-powered devices and batteries.

The bills now await approval from Mayor Eric Adams before becoming law.
